Local heating systems are usually placed at one end of the greenhouse. Boilers are pressure vessels designed to heat water or produce steam which can then be used to provide space heating and or service water heating to a building. Central heating systems consist of a boiler in a central location. Both gas and oil fired boilers use controlled combustion of the fuel to heat water.

Boilers heat with steam or hot water and can burn a variety of fuels. These systems typically incorporate a heat mass that can absorb the heat and then give it off to the surrounding area. This radiant heating method works on the same principal as the average central heating installations in homes. The heating of a greenhouse is traditionally done by using a central gas boiler which heats water that is distributed into the greenhouse.

Most central heating systems use steel copper or aluminum pipes to distribute hot water through the greenhouse.
